BALTIMORE — More than 600 CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield employees stepped away from their regular work responsibilities on July 15 to support nonprofit organizations and community partners throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and the Eastern Shore.

The service initiative was part of CareFirst’s annual Week of Equity and Action, an employee engagement program focused on learning, reflection and community service. This year’s activities encouraged employees to put the organization’s values into practice by supporting projects connected to health, education, food access, housing, youth development, environmental stewardship and neighborhood revitalization.

“Our CareFirst Difference Makers are stepping out of the office and into communities across the region to take action where it matters most,” said Angela Celestin, executive vice president and chief human resources officer at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield.

“We do this often, but this is a special time for us to join collectively and work side by side with local partners during the Week of Equity & Action to support children, families and organizations advancing health and well-being.”

Volunteer Day served as the community impact component of the weeklong initiative, giving CareFirst employees an opportunity to turn conversations about equity, belonging and organizational values into hands-on service.

Across the region, employees participated in 19 volunteer opportunities benefiting 18 community partners. Projects included packing and distributing food, supporting local food banks and community pantries, preparing meals, assembling school and community supply kits, beautifying parks and assisting organizations serving children, older adults, veterans and families.

In Baltimore, 125 volunteers gathered at Pack Shack, located at 1501 S. Clinton Street, for a large-scale food-packing event from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Employees worked together to prepare meals that were scheduled to be distributed to community partners serving individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.

The activity reflected one of the initiative’s major areas of focus: improving access to basic resources that can affect a person’s overall health and quality of life.

Another 70 CareFirst volunteers served at Kennedy Krieger Institute, located at 1741 Ashland Ave., from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers assisted with activities designed to support patients and their families and also participated in empathy training.

Kennedy Krieger provides specialized services for children, adolescents and adults with diseases, injuries and disorders that affect the nervous system. The volunteer activities offered CareFirst employees an opportunity to better understand the experiences of patients and caregivers while supporting the institute’s programs.

Celestin said the range of projects demonstrated how collective service can create a meaningful impact.

“From assembling school supplies and preparing comfort items for young patients to creating meal kits for families facing food insecurity, the work our team is doing shows how meaningful change happens when we come together in service of something bigger than ourselves,” she said.

CareFirst describes the Week of Equity and Action as an opportunity for associates from across the organization to examine how shared values can strengthen belonging, improve decision-making and produce better outcomes for members and communities.

This year’s theme emphasized putting those values into action both inside and outside the workplace. Through volunteer service, employees were able to engage directly with nonprofit organizations addressing immediate community needs.

The July 15 projects also highlighted the connection between community conditions and overall health. Reliable access to food, safe housing, educational opportunities, supportive youth programs and healthy neighborhood spaces can influence the well-being of individuals and families.

By working alongside local partners, CareFirst employees contributed volunteer labor while learning more about the organizations serving communities throughout the region.

The Week of Equity and Action is intended to reinforce that equity is not limited to internal workplace discussions. It also requires collaboration, reflection and sustained community involvement.

For the hundreds of employees who participated, Volunteer Day provided a chance to translate those principles into service while helping nonprofit partners expand their capacity and reach.
