SANTA CLARA, Calif – This U.S. men's national team is full of suprises.

One day it's a meaningless final Group Stage loss to Türkiye. The next time on the pitch it's an explosive offensive display that resulted in a convincing 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the FIFA World Cup before a wailing, sign-waving, enthusatic sold-out crowding of 68,827 fans at Levi's Stadium.

Displaying composure and tactical precision, the U.S. men's team advanced to the Round of 16 and secured a victory in the Round of 32 for just the second time in team history. 

The Americans now move deeper into the world's largest sporting event and face Belgium on July 6 in Seattle. A win in the Round of 16 would mean the U.S. advances to the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time since 2002.

But first it was a win over another European team – snapping a 12-match losing streak against European squads. 

Playing among the backdrop of Silicone Valley, the U.S. team played with the confidence any venture capitalist could appreciate. 

"We deserved this as a group," Malik Tillman said.

The match kicked off with both teams assessing each other’s defenses, but it was striker Folarin Balogun who broke through, scoring a crucial goal for U.S. in the 45th minute, just before half-time.

His goal, a well-executed strike from within the box, provided the initial momentum for the Americans. His fleet footwork, where he was able to stay on balance, shift his feet and crank a shot from 

As the second half unfolded, USA faced a setback when Balogun received a red card in the 64th minute, reducing the team to 10 men.

 However, this did not hamper their defense or resolve.

Michael Tillman extended USA’s lead with a deft goal in the 82nd minute, securing the victory. The goal showcased his clinical finishing abilities, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Bosnia & Herzegovina made multiple substitutions, notably at the 51st minute to boost their attacking options, but failed to penetrate USA’s structured defense.

Despite maintaining 52 percent possession and attempting nine total shots, Bosnia & Herzegovina's efforts were thwarted by USA’s disciplined defensive line and three critical saves by the U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese.

Meanwhile, Bosnia & Herzegovina appeared vulnerable in crucial moments, obtaining two yellow cards in the 80th minute, which reflected mounting frustrations.

This victory propels USA to the next stage of the tournament, while Bosnia & Herzegovina are eliminated, needing to reassess their strategies and performance to compete at this level in future competitions.
